JAIL
PROGRAMS
Education, skill
development, and counseling are integral to the San Francisco
county jail system. Prisoners are expected to participate in programs
while in jail. Prisoners who progress satisfactorily in jail programs
may be transferred during the latter part of their sentence to
a Sheriff's Alternative Program: SWAP/PREP
or Residential County Parole.

GENERAL EDUCATION
Literacy, mathematical
skills, English language development, and other educational courses
are provided throughout the county jail system.
Among programs offered
are GED - high school equivalence preparation, testing and certification,
English as a Second Language, literacy tutoring, computer literacy,
multi-cultural and ethnic studies, Learning Assessment and Mediation
Project, Instructional Television Series, health and nutrition,
creative writing, Library of America, Introduction to the law, mentor
counseling and women's studies. Teaching staff is provided by the
Milpitas School District, San Francisco City College, California
Arts Council, and the Department of Public Health.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE
SISTERS (Sisters in Sober
Treatment Empowered in Recovery) - An in-custody
therapeutic
community which provides educational and substance abuse counseling
for
women, staffed by counselors from Walden House and Deputy Sheriffs.
ROADS TO RECOVERY
- An in-custody therapeutic community which provides
educational and substance abuse counseling for men staffed by
counselors from Milestones and Deputy Sheriffs.
COUNSELING AND TREATMENT
- Acupuncture detoxification is used in some jail
programs for treatment for stress and to reduce cravings for
drugs.

Group counseling
and discussion of addictive behavior and treatment. Narcotics Anonymous
and Alcoholics Anonymous, 12-step programs are open to everyone including
groups for
men, women and Spanish speakers.
VIOLENCE PREVENTION

RSVP
(Resolve to Stop the
Violence Project) - RSVP is an in-custody and
post
release violence prevention program based on the principles of Restorative
Justice.
Violent offenders
are required to participate in a 16-hour-a-day program staffed
by
deputy sheriffs, community violence counselors and staff from
organizations
representing victims and survivors of violent crimes.
Other aspects of
this program are described under Post-Release Programs
(RSVP/Community Restoration)
and Community Programs
(RSVP/Victim Services).

VOCATIONAL TRAINING
Vocational training
in the jails includes the Garden Project/Horticulture, Culinary Arts, Print
Shop, Landscaping, and Job Readiness.
COUNSELING
A wide range
of counseling services are available to inmates, varying from jail to jail
depending on what type of facility they are housed in. Included are: Parenting,
Children's Center, Drama Therapy, Issues and Treatment, Horticulture Therapy,
Group Counseling, Women's Support Group, AIDS Workshops, Life Skills, Stress
Reduction, Yoga and Meditation, Anger Management, Conflict Resolution,
Violence Prevention, Men's Groups, Tools for Healing.

ARTS - Arts instruction
and activities include: Introduction to Music, Art, Graphic and visual
Art
Therapy, Theater, Post-Release Art Therapy.
LIBRARY SERVICES - Library
services are available in all of the jails including regular book
and magazine distribution, Project READ and Law Library.
RELIGIOUS SERVICES - Services
for all denominations are available.
