The Civil Division is responsible for carrying out all judgments of the civil courts including:

  • Receiving monies due the prevailing parties of civil law suits, then disbursing funds as directed by court order.

  • Attaching, maintaining custody of and selling personal and real property.

  • Collecting fees in advance for services performed by the Sheriff's Department.

  • Serving civil bench warrants, subpoenas and other court papers.

  • Performing evictions and garnishments.

  • Providing assistance to evictees (Eviction Assistance Program).

    The Civil Division collected and disbursed over $6.8 million and collected $326,000 in fees during fiscal year 2000-2001, for deposit in the City's General Fund.

    The San Francisco Sheriff's Department assists elderly, handicapped and indigent civil evictees by coordinating services with dozens of community assistance agencies throughout San Francisco. Since the program was initiated in 1980, more than 20,000 evictees and landlords have been assisted. See also Community Programs.
