The
San Francisco Sheriff's Department is like no other sheriff's department
in California, or possibly the nation. Michael Hennessey, in his 27-year
tenure as Sheriff of San Francisco, has created and implemented programs
focused on improving the life skills of prisoners so that when they return
to their communities they are less likely to commit new crimes. A
dedicated staff of Deputy Sheriffs and program personnel administer educational
programs, drug and alcohol treatment, counseling, horticulture and community
programs proven to cut recidivism and begin interaction and healing between
offenders and communities.

Hennessey's commitment to recruiting deputies from all of San Francisco's
diverse communities. The department has the highest representation
of women and minorities of any major law enforcement agency in the
nation -- more than 70% of total sworn staff.

Training
Training
for San Francisco Sheriff’s Deputies is a continuing process. New hires
attend an introductory seven-week Department orientation course, a six-week
Jail Training Officer program and, within the first year of employment,
a 20-week California State certified police academy. Upon graduation from
the academy, deputies are fully accredited peace officers under California
law (POST certified). If a deputy wishes to be a part of the field support
unit, he/she must complete a12-week Field Training Officer program. Advanced
officer training is made available to every officer. The Department has
received eighteen "Excellence in Training" awards from the state of California
in the past nineteen years.
