Founded in 1992 as a joint project of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department and the Department of Public Works, the Tree corps has planted over 6,500 street trees on major and secondary thoroughfares and employed over 60 low-income San Franciscans. The Corps currently waters and maintains approximately 2,300 newly planted trees, and plants 800 trees per year. Eleven participants are employed by the Corps to work 32 hours per week from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Tree Corps graduates have gone on to jobs with the City and County of San Francisco and local businesses. Some have gone back to school, and others have even started their own businesses. The Tree Corps prevents crime, beautifies neighborhoods, and gives people the opportunity to have and hold a job. The Tree Corps is a proven model that works. |
