JOBS: 8300 Sheriff's Cadet


 

The cadets at the Sheriff's Department are uniformed, trainee positions and employed for a maximum of three years. Cadets are encouraged to advance to the next level of 8302 Deputy Sheriff I through the examination process during the three-year trainee period.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under direct supervision of a sworn member or higher-ranking personnel of the Sheriff's Department, an 8300 Sheriff's Cadet may perform any or all of the following duties:

Building and Area Security for locations under Sheriff's Department control, such as monitoring walkthrough metal detectors and video surveillance equipment, operating hand held metal detectors, searching handbags and other carry-in bags. Providing directions and other information to persons entering public buildings. Providing first aid and CPR in case of life-threatening emergencies and other related non-law enforcement duties as assigned.

Administration, Alternative Programs, or Custody Division clerical tasks, such as answering telephones, routing calls, taking phone messages, performing typing and filing tasks, operating a computer workstation; fingerprinting new employees and service providers in the jails; initially screening incoming program applicants, handling interoffice mail deliveries; urine sample collection and urinalysis using ADX machine; using SFSD radio, and other related non-law enforcement duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF APPLICATION:

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s license, and have the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with other Sheriff’s Department and City staff, outside governmental agencies, and the public.  Graduating high school seniors who are at least 18 years of age may participate in the examination, and will remain under waiver until proof of a high school diploma is submitted.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified applicants will be subject to a background investigation and a Sheriff's Department physical agility test prior to appointment. Preferred candidates will have demonstrated an interest in law enforcement. Appointees must successfully complete specialized training provided by the Sheriff's Department, and must maintain satisfactory job performance. Candidates will be required to demonstrate reading, writing, and mathematical proficiency at a high school level.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Applicants meeting minimum qualifications are NOT guaranteed advancement in the process. The best-qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a basic skills written examination, physical agility exam and an interview. The decision of the appointing officer as to an applicant's qualifications for further screening and appointment will be final.

Qualified applicants will be notified by mail of the time and place to report for the examination.

All candidates will be required to successfully pass the background investigation before an offer of appointment is made.

SALARY & BENEFITS:

Salary Range:

$16.35/ hr.
$1,308/bi-weekly
$34,008/annually

Benefits Program:

Vacation is 10 days per year (Available to provisional employees after one year of employment with the City)

Paid Sick Leave, Retirement Program and Health/Dental Coverage [Available to provisional employees after six months (1040 hours) of continuous service]

Floating Holidays: Minimum of 3 per fiscal year

Benefits for part-time employees are pro-rated.
