San Francisco Junior Deputy Program

The San Francisco Junior Deputy Program (SFJDP) is a mentorship program open to young people ages 7-18, which provides opportunities for youth to participate in extracurricular activities while learning leadership skills and promoting respect for others.

What is the San Francisco Junior Deputy Program?

Sponsored by the San Francisco Sheriff's Office (SFSO), the nonprofit Junior Deputy Program partners young people ages 7-18 with SFSO members, public safety professionals and community volunteers.

Volunteers lead youth in after-school activities, such as art and sports, while supporting and helping them build their self-confidence, promote human connections and develop their leadership potential.

SFJDP programs

There are several ongoing San Francisco Junior Deputy programs as well as seasonal initiatives (see sidebar) to benefit the community. Please note: due to the current pandemic, in-person activity schedules are subject to change.

Programs include:

  • Junior Deputy Academy: Year-round youth leadership program that introduces youth to public service careers. Participants meet weekly and participate in the Junior Deputy advanced training academy offered during the summer.
  • Go Beyond the Arc (GBA): This program gives at-risk youth the opportunity to learn about, participate and develop skills in competitive sports. GBA also awards scholarships to youth who want to join local sports teams or clubs.
  • New Trendz Media: Young people ages nine to 18 are exposed to media and visual arts in classes, workshops, camps and other activities. Participants learn about and create different art forms from a mixtape to a movie and original designs, using high-end computers, studio equipment and cameras.
  • SF Junior Deputy Mounted Unit: A unique STEM equestrian program where young women and men learn equestrian skills and take horsemanship, anatomy, psychology, equine husbandry, research, and equine-assisted growth courses.
